MAP Neighborhood Outreach Initiative: Care for Your Neighbor Program

On Saturday, December 12, the Monrovia Area Partnership (MAP) coordinated landscape beautification efforts with our MAP Neighborhood Leaders and volunteers, with the goals of improving two senior citizen homeowners’ landscape appearances. The Care for Your Neighbor program provides free drought-tolerant plants and mulch for low maintenance yards. This wonderful program came as an idea from the MAP Leaders who had a desire to help their fellow residents and volunteer more in the community.

Thanks to local sponsors, the Volunteer Center of San Gabriel Valley, MAP Neighborhood Leaders and our resident expert in leaf blowing Mayor Pro-tem Spicer,  this project was successful and the lucky homeowners have had their yards transformed! We are so appreciative of all of our volunteers who came out and worked hard to roto-till the yards, lay a heavy duty weed barrier, plant beautiful drought tolerant plants, and spread mulch. Be on the lookout for more volunteer opportunities during the year!

This fall, Neighborhood Services hosted our 8th Annual MAP Adult Leadership Academy and welcomed 14 more members to the MAP Family. Our MAP Leaders now have a better understanding of Monrovia and how our local government works, are more inclined to participate in community events and have met great neighbors they might not have met otherwise! Check out our new leaders as they graduated in front of City Council Tuesday, November 3rd!

The MAP Leadership Academy provides a foundation of knowledge to jump-start and sustain residents’ service in the community. After the Academy, graduates become part of an ever-growing network of community leaders. We call these graduates our MAP Neighborhood Leaders. All Neighborhood Leaders are invited to MAP quarterly trainings, are eligible for assistance with neighborhood meetings & events and are notified of leadership and volunteer opportunities that become available in the community.  They partner with us to serve and to continue to build this great  community!

Asian Tiger Mosquitos in Monrovia

Asian Tiger Mosquitoes IN MONROVIA, UPDATE FROM
SAN GABRIEL VALLEY MOSQUITO & VECTOR CONTROL DISTRICT
SCHEDULED FOR NOVEMBER 3, 2015

Recently, the City was informed by the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito & Vector Control District (MVCD) that Asian Tiger Mosquitoes are in the area, and that they are aggressive and biting even during the daytime hours!  This specific breed of mosquitoes are invasive to our area and getting bitten by one of these insects tends to cause more irritation, larger bumps, and more itching than other types of mosquito bites.  Additionally, Asian Tiger Mosquitoes are known vectors of several types of human arboviruses, including; chikungunya and dengue in humans.

Asian Tiger Mosquitos can be recognized by their small black body which have distinctive white stripes.

Watch the MVCDs public services announcement regarding the Asian Tiger Mosquito at the following link:

Some tips that were shared by the MVCD regarding preventing the spread of mosquitos include the following:
  1. Mosquitoes require stagnant, or standing, water to breed.  Residents should strive to eliminate any standing water from their yards, watered vegetation, planters, and flower pots.
  2. After every rain, remember to "Dump and Drain" any areas with standing water.  Even a small amount of water will create a breeding ground.
  3. Residents who suspect that Asian Tiger Mosquitoes are present in their yards should routinely dispose of or carefully clean and disinfect any containers that hold water.
Additional information can also be found online at: http://www.sgvmosquito.org/index.php, and service requests can be submitted electronically at http://www.sgvmosquito.org/submit_service_request.php.

Thank You for Conserving!

Since entering Phase IV of Monrovia's Water Conservation Plan, Monrovians have been doing AWESOME to conserve water! During the extended drought that all of us in California have been dealing with, Monrovians have stepped up to the plate to do their part to conserve water.  As you may recall, based on the water conservation goals that have been established by the State, the City has been comparing our current monthly water usage rates with the same corresponding monthly period in 2013.

During the past several months, our community has continued to step-up to the challenge of using less water.  We have been happy to report that Monrovia has realized significant water use reductions every single month between June 2015 – September 2015.

Many thanks to all for the terrific job of conserving water!  For additional tips on how to use water wisely and upcoming water conservation events, please feel free to visit the City’s website at:

Preparing for El Nino!

Climatologists are predicting a strong El Nino for this fall/winter season; which brings the possibility of severe flooding across much of the state. Because of that, we have some helpful tips on some things that you can do now to prepare yourself, your home and family for any consequences as a result of El Nino storms.

Prepare your home:
  1. Clean up your yard and store/secure outdoor furniture
  2. Make sure all drains and gutters are cleared of debris and functioning properly
  3. Inspect your roof for times of trouble.
  4. Inspect all retaining walls, surface drains, ditches etc for obstructions or other signs of malfunctions before and after storms.
  5. Inspect all sloped areas on your property for signs of surface cracks, slumping, etc.
  6. Large bare areas could turn into a source for mud-flows during storm events.

Prepare your basic disaster supply kit,  it should include a clear gallon tub filled with:

  1. A battery powered hand crank radio to listen to evacuation routes
  2. A flashlight
  3. Batteries
  4. A first aid kit
  5. A whistle
  6. Water
  7. Canned food and can opener
  8. A cell phone with external chargers or solar powered chargers
  9. Prescription medications
  10. Eye glasses
  11. Formula and diapers for babies
  12. Pet food and water for animals

Be safe out there and do what you can to prepare!

What To Do About Abandoned Carts

Have you noticed those pesky abandoned carts around town? Not too many right?

Thanks to hard working City Staff, the "Shopping Cart Containment/ Retrieval Ordinance" was put in place in August 2011. This ordinance assists in requiring businesses to keep their shopping carts on site. In addition to that, also require retrieval of store's carts, should they leave the store area.

While this ordinance has been so helpful to ensure there is less blight, and our streets are clean and safe, sometimes carts can appear in places they are not supposed to.

So what can we do?

  1. Call the California Shopping Cart Retrieval Corporation (800) 252-4613
  2. Request a pick up online HERE
  3. Download the California Shopping Cart Retrieval Corporation app & request a pick up

Thank you all for your help with this!

The Monrovia Area Partnership Presents the Leadership Academy

The MAP Leadership Academy demonstrates initiative and innovation by educating our residents on how to actively participate in our community. This program partners with residents and local resources to facilitate open lines of communication, build trust and find creative solutions to enhance our city.

Residents are empowered through the training sessions on how to network with existing City resources to improve their neighborhoods. By educating Monrovia residents on the resources available, residents in turn become advocates for a thriving community.

The MAP Leadership Academy has been offered annually since 2009 and boasts 150+ MAP Neighborhood Leaders! Our leaders are doing amazing work all over the City and we want YOU to join them. Sign up by filling out the application* (CLICK HERE) today
